The city of Helotes, TX is nestled in the middle of the beautiful Texas Hill Country. For all of its attractive surroundings, Helotes paints the portrait of small-town charm.
Even though Helotes has been on the Texas map since the 19th century, many are surprised to learn it achieved official “city status” only as recently as 1981. In its earliest years, Helotes was known merely as a stagecoach stop between San Antonio and Bandera. Its rich history does not stop there, as Lipan Apaches, Tonkawas and Comanches have all called this city “home” at one point in time.
In the middle of the 20th century, Helotes began to shed its reputation as a farming community by opening its first country store. This marked a shift to commerce and economic growth. Today, Helotes enjoys a strong, flourishing economy as a result of that transition. History only adds to the city’s attractiveness, as the original John T. Floore Country Store building has been named a national landmark, with top musical talent often performing on its stage.
Helotes continues to grow to this day, balancing historical preservation with the forward movement of modern life. Still, it has not lost its small-town charm. In 2013, Helotes was named the ‘Best Small Town in Texas to Raise Children,’ by Bloomberg Businessweek.
