The small city of Grey Forest, TX, is located in the hill country of Northwest Bexar County, about 25 miles northwest of downtown San Antonio. It covers very little land area— less than one square mile in fact— along Scenic Loop Road just north of Helotes. Grey Forest is home to a population of only about 500 people.
With its natural scenic beauty, Grey Forest grew in the 1920s with real estate development that attracted nearby San Antonio residents to build summer homes. The community officially incorporated as a city in 1962. A forest of grey-green live oaks fill the area, amid a number of quaint stone cottages dating back to the late 1800s. Grey Forest has recently become a haven for a number of artists and craftsmen. Both the Helotes and Lee Creeks run through Grey Forest, which celebrates its location and charm with the motto, “A Scenic Playground.”
